USES of EM

HOUSEHOLD USES

EM is an environmentally safe detergent and deodorising agent for washing and cleaning. Its acidity, antioxidant properties and competitiveness against other microbes eliminate mould, fungus and harmful bacteria from the house. EM also helps to eliminate odours from pets, cigarette smoke and odour-causing bacteria.

GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING

EM is used to enhance plant, water and soil qualities in various ways. It can be sprayed on soil as a pre-planting treatment, used to inoculate seeds or transplants, and applied to growing crops as a foliar spray or through irrigation systems. EM is useful in growing nursery crops, container-grown plants, and even in hydroponics. After crops are harvested, EM is used to help break down crop residues. EM can be applied to green manure crops and pastures during growth and upon incorporation into the soil.

EM Bokashi Composting

"Bokashi" is a Japanese word meaning "fermented organic matter". It is a system of odourless composting, using EM bokashi and specially designed buckets to ferment organic kitchen waste. It takes about 10 days to start the composting process and after 2 weeks you are left with nutrient- and microbe-rich compost ready to use on your house plants, garden or lawn. The system allows you to compost all kinds of organic waste including meat, fish and dairy products. Composting also release a large amount of liquid from the waste. This liquid is rich in nutrients and microbes and can be used as liquid fertiliser or drain cleaner.

Activating EM (A-EM) with the Garden Yoghurt Maker

The Garden Yoghurt Maker is a mains powered thermal control incubator. This incubator enables every 250ml of EM solution to be extended into 5L of activated EM (A-EM).

The primary reason to activate EM is economy, not efficiency. It is perfectly acceptable to use EM without activating it. However, adding a sugar source (i.e. molasses) and culturing the microbes ensures that the microbes are active. Having followed the instructions with your EM activator, the end result will be a full strength culture of A-EM, that can then be diluted and applied.

ANIMAL HEALTH

EM can be used with pets, livestock and farm animals, and aquarium fish to enhance their lives and suppress odours. EM improves the microflora in animals’ intestines and increases nutrient absorption. Production of harmful gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and methane is reduced. Animals, sheds and litter boxes can be sprayed with diluted EM (x100) once a week or as necessary. EM can also be added to drinking water and bathing water. In addition, EM bokashi can be mixed into feed (1-5% of feed). For aquariums, add 1 part EM to 1000 parts water once a week.

SEPTIC TANK/ POND TREATMENT

To treat livestock slurry facility, solid waste and food waste, spray EM at a ratio of 1:100 parts water. For sewers, septic systems, holding tanks and portable toilets, apply 1 litre of EM per 1000 gallon holding capacity every 3 months by pouring down a drain in the house or directly into the holding tank. The septic system still may need regular pumping and maintenance.

To control algal blooms, in ponds or fountain, for each 10,000L capacity, dilute 1L 1litre A-EM with 50litre water and spray every 2-4 weeks. If it is not possible to spray the solution, introduce EM at several different points around the pond. Results will vary depending on the source of inflow and other factors.
